Oinkvote's answer is entirely correct in that you aren't getting any more data through the up/resampling, so it can never be better.Slightly longer answer: All resampling processes between non-integer ratios (as between 96 and 44.1 is essentially a slightly lossy process, and the result will always be 'worse' than the original (even if it may be very hard to actually tell the difference in a listening test). There is a comparison of resampling algorithms, which shows some of the artifacts that different resamplers have.

In general, the best performing ones are typically not well-suited for realtime use, due to their complexity causing somewhat excessive CPU use.As an additional concern, many playback chains, and in particular loudspeakers (and amplifiers) that aren't designed to produce ultrasonics in the first place can sound significantly worse if they are fed a 24/96 signal due to intermodulation distortion. I have prepared a test file to check whether your system is capable of playing 24/96 material properly. (3.1 MB 24/96 WAV).Instructions:.

Be somewhat careful with the volume - start the test no higher than 'background listening' volume, and increase the volume carefully throughout the test file. Set your operating system/DAC to operate at 24/96. Open the downloaded file in a music player, and play it.

If you hear anything, your system isn't capable of playing 24/96 files cleanly, and you would likely benefit, quality-wise from always leaving your DAC at 24/44.1Explanation: The file contains two layered tone sweeps, that are both well outside the human range of hearing. If your playback chain distorts ultrasonic information, you get intermodulation distortion, which manifests as sonic components well inside the human range of hearing, and you'll hear what appears to be a warbling tone sweep. Do not upsample your music.

If you live in a country where CDs cost $20-$40 like me (australia) the pricing is actually cheaper than some retail CDs.Depending on whether you are on pc or mac you will need to find a decent player software. Vlc is a good start for either os. Make sure you set your output to 24-96 or it will downsample everything.Excuse any spelling errors, I'm on a phone. Actually look into your software chain to see if it resamples properly. In the year 2013, this apparently is still a topic.

Itunes has, for what it's worth, a reputation for 'sounding good', but bad software mixing can bite you in the foot. The issue occurs if you have say a cd at 44.1 khz and youtube playing at 48khz at the same time.

The sound device is usually not reconfigured to different sampling rates, but instead everything is upsampled in software to the highest supported rate. For tight misses as 44.1/48, there is plenty to do wrong, and aliasingmay occur. This is the price to pay for enabling two applications to output sound at the same time.If you are using linux, feed your favorite web search engine the words alsa and dmix. You may be surprised.

Read -Current version is 0.8.3 -Existing discussion thread -You don't need Sox resampler to play FLAC files. Describe what you are trying to do and someone can hopefully help.I'm only trying to upsample.

I realize I don't need sox to play flac files. I was just wondering if there was any benefit to 14.4.1 for foobar over past releases. I have 0.8.3 already.

When I ran 14.4.1, it installed two shortcuts on my desktop- sox.exe and wget.exe. I then went into program files to see what sox 14.4.1 had for components and found two. Do I just copy and paste them into foobar components or do I even need not worry about 14.4.1? Sorry if I sound like a newb, but I am. Last Edit: 2013-02-27 15:58:18 by hatrack71. Hero Member.
