Oinkvote's answer is entirely correct in that you aren't getting any more data through the up/resampling, so it can never be better.Slightly longer answer: All resampling processes between non-integer ratios (as between 96 and 44.1 is essentially a slightly lossy process, and the result will always be 'worse' than the original (even if it may be very hard to actually tell the difference in a listening test). There is a comparison of resampling algorithms, which shows some of the artifacts that different resamplers have.

Itunes has, for what it's worth, a reputation for 'sounding good', but bad software mixing can bite you in the foot. The issue occurs if you have say a cd at 44.1 khz and youtube playing at 48khz at the same time.
The sound device is usually not reconfigured to different sampling rates, but instead everything is upsampled in software to the highest supported rate. For tight misses as 44.1/48, there is plenty to do wrong, and aliasingmay occur. I realize I don't need sox to play flac files. I was just wondering if there was any benefit to 14.4.1 for foobar over past releases. I have 0.8.3 already.
When I ran 14.4.1, it installed two shortcuts on my desktop- sox.exe and wget.exe. I then went into program files to see what sox 14.4.1 had for components and found two.
